Beware spoilers! Giant Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA assembly line begins operations in West London – News

A 2.7-mile conveyor network has been launched in West London to transport more than 5 million tons of earth excavated for the construction of HS2. The use of the conveyor will eliminate the need for 1 million trucks on west London roads, reducing traffic congestion and emissions.
HS2 Contractors Balfour Beatty Joint Venture VINCI SYSTRA (JV BBVS) and Joint Venture Skanska Costain STRABAG (JV SCS) have worked together to build a network of conveyors that converge at the HS2 Logistics Center at Euroterminal Willesden.
The conveyor belt network has three branches serving the Old Oak bus station, Victoria Road and Atlas Road junctions. At the Old Oak Common station, contractor HS2 Ltd, JV BBVS will use conveyors to remove 1.5 million tons of soil that is being excavated for the station box, the underground structure under which the HS2 platform will be built.
Commenting on the launch of the conveyor system, Lee Holmes, Director of Station Operations at HS2 Ltd, said: “The launch of our conveyor system in West London is another major milestone for HS2 Ltd. This impressive conveyor network means we can greatly reduce the impact of building locally. HS2 continues to gain momentum as the project approaches its peak construction period, and systems such as these conveyors are just one of the ways we are working to reduce the carbon footprint of our construction.”
Nigel Russell, Project Director for Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA, said: “As we work to build a new high-speed railway in the UK, we are always looking for new ways to reduce the carbon footprint associated with our operations.
“Conveyor belt is a great example of how we do it; working with our partners to develop new and innovative solutions that not only reduce our emissions, but also reduce the inconvenience to travelers and local communities.”
The SCS joint venture will use the branch line serving the section of the Victoria Road junction and will transport the excavated material for the junction. In addition, when two TBMs are rolled off site at the end of 2023, production from the construction of the Northolt East Tunnel will also be transported to the logistics center via a conveyor.
The last spur runs from the Atlas Road site and will be used for excavation of the logistic tunnel from Atlas Road to Old Oak Park. The conveyor will then pass through the logistics tunnel and remove material from excavations at the Euston Tunnel, further reducing the impact on the local road network.
From Old Oak Common, where the conveyor moves at 2.1 meters per second, it takes 17.5 minutes to get to the logistics center. Conveyor systems include noise barriers and shrouds to prevent noise and limit the spread of dust.
James Richardson, Managing Director of Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture, said: “SCS JV is proud to be part of the partnership to build the HS2 environmentally friendly conveyor network responsible for removing more than five million tons of soil.
“Moving dumps on an extensive 2.7-mile conveyor network means a million fewer truck trips, fewer disruptions for local residents and businesses, and allows us to meet our zero-carbon commitment.”
From the logistics centre, scrap metal will be transported by rail to three destinations in the UK – Barrington in Cambridgeshire, Cliff in Kent and Rugby in Warwickshire – where it will be profitably reused, filling gaps that are then used as a basis for further use. development, such as a housing project.
To date, the logistics hub has processed over 430,000 tons of waste, and over 300 trains have delivered the waste to its destination.
