Endicott’s last EJ building to be renovated

Renovations are planned for the last remaining Endicott Johnson shoe factory in Endicott Village.
The six-story building on the corner of Oak Hill Avenue and Clark Street was purchased by IBM over 50 years ago. For much of the 20th century, it was one of EJ’s many assets that stood out as a reminder of the company’s influence on Endicott.
Milwaukee-based Phoenix Investors last September purchased the sprawling former IBM manufacturing site, now known as the Huron campus.
Plans to restore the building’s dilapidated façade are nearing completion, said Chris Pelto, who oversees the facility.
In recent days, cranes have been used at the site to remove some of the unused equipment from the structure and haul the material up to the roof.
NYSEG had to remove power poles and transformers located near the building before exterior work could begin. Power for the structure will be provided by generators during the project, which is likely to start sometime in September.
According to Pelto, the exterior of the building will be renovated. Internal improvements to the 140,000-square-foot building are also planned.
